Sunniva Rødland (b. 1977) is a classically trained Norwegian harpist (PhD). She is creative and innovative, with a broad repertoire. Rødland has to date premiered sixteen solo works, and she has had long-term collaborations with a number of composers, often as co-creator in the composition process. She has appeared as soloist at numerous festivals, including the World Harp Congress (Vancouver), AngelicA festival (Bologna), Ultima Contemporary Music Festival (Oslo), Harp Festival (Utrecht) and Téte-à-Téte Bijloke Muziekcentrum (Ghent), and she has performed solo concerts with, among others, the Norwegian Wind Ensemble, the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, and Trondheim Symphony Orchestra. Rødland is a founding member of Permatrio, an ensemble that commissions works for voice, percussion and harp – focusing on our relationship to nature. Rødland teaches harp and topics related to contemporary music on all levels. She is currently a board member of Sagene kunstsmie.
In 2015 Rødland completed a Ph.D. at the Norwegian Academy of Music under the auspices of its Artistic Research Fellowships Programme. In her project, “Let the Harp Sound!”, she researched the role of the harp in Norwegian contemporary music and offered new perspectives on the instrument. Rødland has done a number of innovative presentations using acoustic and electronic instruments, video, theatre, improvisation and installation. In addition to focusing on her solo projects, Rødland has freelanced as harpist for many years. Since the 1990s she has frequently been hired by Norwegian orchestras as an extra musician, and she has collaborated with ensembles and choirs throughout Norway. Rødland contributes to recordings of orchestras and sinfoniettas such as Ensemble Ernst, Oslo Sinfonietta and Bit20 Ensemble. She has also participated in a number of recordings with artists from other genres, for example, the jazz saxophonist Petter Wettre and pop artist Susanne Sundfør. Rødland’s solo releases are “Postures – Norwegian Harp Music” (LAWO Classics 2019), Mark Adderley’s “All plans last only until the first shot — Live” (LabLabel 2016) and a DVD of Simon Steen-Andersen’s “History of My Instrument” (to be released – Wergo).
Rødland studied harp with Willy Postma (Norwegian Academy of Music), Meinir Heulyn and Caryl Thomas (Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama). She has also received individual tutoring from Edward Witsenburg and Judy Loman, among others.

Sunniva Rødland, PhD, har et bredt repertoar, og er internasjonalt kjent for sine særegne utforskninger innen samtidsmusikk. Rødland har til nå urfremført 16 soloverk for harpe. Hun har hatt langvarige samarbeid med en rekke komponister, ofte som medskaper i komposisjonsprosessene. Rødland har presentert innovative prosjekter, med akustiske og elektroniske instrumenter, video, teater, improvisasjon og installasjon. I samarbeid med Notam fikk hun i 2015 bygget en unik elektrisk harpe med én utgang per streng, som senere har blitt brukt til live installasjoner og kringlydskonserter (3D). I 2019 utga Lawo Classics hennes soloinnspilling «Postures», som oppnådde 9/10 poeng i det internasjonale harpemagasinet «Harp Column». Innspillingen ble nominert til Deutscher Musikpreis, Opus Klassik 2020.

Rødland mottok Statens kunstnerstipend 2020-22 for et prosjekt med klimautfordringer som fokus, et arbeid som førte til opprettelsen av ensemblet Permatrio og nye verk for harpe og elektronikk. Rødland tok sin doktorgrad ved Norges musikkhøyskole 2008-2012, i regi av Program for kunstnerisk utviklingsarbeid, med «Let the Harp Sound!». Der utforsket hun harpens rolle i norsk samtidsmusikk, hadde flere tette komponistsamarbeid og gjorde over 40 konserter. Prosjektet ga nye innfallsvinkler til instrumentet.
Rødland har vært solist på festivaler som AngelicA Festival (Bologna), Sound of Stockholm, de Bijloke/Tête à tête (Gent), The Dutch Harp Festival (Utrecht), The World Harp Congress (Vancouver), Les signes de l’arc (Paris), Ilios og Ultima (Oslo). Hun har vært solist med blant andre Det norske blåseensemble, KORK og Trondheim symfoniorkester. I tillegg til å fokusere på sine soloprosjekter har Rødland frilanset som harpist i mange år. Siden 90-tallet har hun vært en hyppig innleid ekstramusiker i de norske orkestrene og hun har samarbeidet med ensembler og kor over hele landet.
Rødland deltar på innspillinger med orkestre og sinfoniettaer som Oslo- filharmonien, Ensemble Ernst, Oslo sinfonietta, Bit20 Ensemble. Hun har i tillegg gjort flere innspillinger med artister i andre sjangre, som jazzsaksofonisten Petter Wettre og popartisten Susanne Sundfør. Rødlands soloutgivelser er
